How I Found the Leadership Voice I Was Teaching Everyone Else

For most of my 3-decade career, I was known for helping other people find their voice.

As an Executive Coach, Leadership Advisor and Human Capital Leader, I coached and prepped thousands of leaders and executive candidates. I helped them articulate their value to hiring authorities, strengthen their executive presence, tell their story with clarity, and step into roles they once believed were beyond reach.

I could translate experience into language that Boards, CEOs, and hiring committees demanded.  I could see leadership patterns, blind spots, and untapped potential with precision.

By every professional measure, including candidate and client feedback, I was very good at what I did.

And yet, for a long time, none of that excellence translated cleanly to my own inner or outer growth.

What I did not fully understand at the time was this truth:

I was operating as a top 10% leader for everyone else while leaving myself in the bottom 10%.

I did not know my own leadership voice.

I did not trust my own impact.
I did not honor my instincts.
I did not fully stand in my authority.

Instead, I lived inside a cycle that took my years to realize then break.

I call it my “Peak and Plummet cycle.”

The cycle looks like this.

I rise consistently. I perform at a high level. I receive recognition, momentum, validation.

Then suddenly something shifts. I pull back. I self-edit. I second-guess. I made stupid mistakes because of lack of focus.  I over rule myself just enough to stay safe.

Eventually, I would rebuild.
I would regain traction, peak again…then plummet once again, often harder and faster.

From the outside, it looks like a case of inconsistency or bad timing.
But on the inside, it was always a voice issue, caused by a lack of belief issue.

Worse, it was a self-trust issue.

At the time, I did not have language for this. I just knew something was not integrating. I was guiding others through powerful transformations while quietly abandoning my own inner authority.

That disconnect eventually forced me into a deeper reckoning.

The Moment Everything Changed

After an intensive one-on-one personal and business facilitation session, my mentor at the time drew a straight through me.

He said a single sentence that altered the trajectory of everything for me:

“Your voice is your healing.”

I did not feel inspired.
I felt exposed.

I assumed he meant visibility or public speaking or branding. But he was pointing to something much deeper.

He was pointing to the way I had learned to contain myself.

I had built a career around articulating other people’s truth while filtering my own. I was deeply competent but selectively expressed. Strategic, but self-protective. Visible, but not fully seen.

That sentence stayed with me, not as motivation, but as a disruption.

Because when something is true, sometimes it does not flatter you.
It can destabilize you…at least it did for me.

Letting it Marinate

For months afterward, I sat with this insight and tried to really make sense of it.

I journaled.
I meditated.
I walked in nature.

One day on a hike, I sat under a huge, old oak tree at my favorite arboretum.

Sitting there and just quieting my mind and taking in nature under that towering oak tree, I legit heard an inner “download”  that landed in a way that felt unmistakable.

Sitting there, a clear inner message arrived:

“Make a lot of noise with your voice and I will carry it in my wind.”

Initially, I didn’t know what that meant either.  I came to understand that I had been given the realization (and the permission) to really use my voice, to amplify it and nature would find a way to get the message to those that truly need to hear it!

Eventually, I re-branded my company Living Oak Leadership because this connection changed everything for me.

Using my voice meant more than speaking. It meant writing honestly. Claiming perspective. Trusting my timing. Letting my presence be felt without constantly managing how it landed.

It meant, not stressing over click-through rates or SEO statistics also.

It meant stepping out from behind a cloud I had learned to hide in while still being highly effective.

This was uncomfortable. Visibility always is when you are no longer performing but embodying.

But slowly, something began to change.

When Voice Becomes Integration

As I began using my voice more fully in my writing, my speaking, and my leadership, I noticed a pattern.

When I spoke from alignment, transformation happened faster.

Not louder.
Not more polished.
Just cleaner.

Clients moved more quickly. Leaders regulated more easily. Teams stopped over-functioning and started trusting themselves.

This realization became the backbone of what is now Living Oak Leadership, a proprietary framework that blends clinical psychology, spiritual intelligence, nervous system awareness, and business mastery.

It is also how the “Corporate Hippie” brand was born.

Because I refused to separate strategy from self-trust.
Leadership from the body.
Success from internal alignment.

Oak trees do not rush.
But they do not apologize either.

Why Voice Is the Leadership Skill We Ignore

Most leadership development focuses on skills, strategy, and performance metrics.

Very little focuses on voice as a regulatory and integrative force.

Yet this is what I see every day in my work.

Leaders do not burn out because they are incapable.
They burn out because they override themselves.

Leaders do not stagnate because they lack ambition.
They stagnate because they do not trust their own signal.

Your voice is not just how you communicate.
It is how you orient yourself to the world.

When your voice is suppressed, delayed, or filtered for safety, your nervous system carries the cost. When your voice is integrated, leadership stabilizes.

Pressure gives way to presence.

What Changed After I Listened

Over the years, this work has taken many forms and has enhanced the offerings I deliver to the world.

  • A global keynote called “Embody and Communicate Your Leadership Voice.”
  • A community of aspiring, high-potential, and seasoned leaders deepening self-leadership and career navigation.
  • Partnerships shaping leadership development and the future of work.
  • Programs focused on Human and Machine integration in the age of AI.

But the throughline has remained consistent.

When I use my voice, it gets amplified no matter what.

And when others learn to trust theirs, they stop abandoning themselves in pursuit of approval, certainty, or speed.

The Obstacle Is the Way

If you are reading this and thinking:

“Visibility feels unsafe.”
“I am better at helping others than helping myself.”
“What I want to say does not fit the market.”

“I’ll be judged.”

I want you to hear this clearly.

What you believe is your greatest obstacle is often your greatest strength.

The Stoics named this directly:

“The obstacle is the way.”

Your voice may feel inconvenient.
It may feel messy.
It may feel too much or not enough.

But it is also the very thing that will heal you, ground you, and allow your leadership to land with impact.

Not because it is perfect.
But because it is true.

And truth carries further than effort ever will.
